Ruth’s life has been a journey of hardship and resilience. When her parents separated when was just four years old, she was left in the care of her aging grandmother, who could barely provide for them. From a young age, Ruth had to find ways to survive, taking on any work she could where she joined her grandmother to sell roasted maize and food by the roadside.
“At times, it’s so risky for me. I return home late after dark because I struggle to make enough sales,” Ruth shares. Her father, a boda-boda rider, helped when he could, but it was never enough. Meanwhile, her mother remarried and completely shut her out, fearing that Ruth’s presence would sabotage her new marriage. “To my mother, I simply didn’t exist.”, says Ruth.
With no opportunity to go to school, Ruth found herself stuck in a cycle of struggle and uncertainty. But she refuses to give up. She dreams of becoming a professional hairdresser, a skill that could give her financial independence and a fresh start. Though she tries to style hair within her community, she lacks the proper training to meet customer expectations, leaving her with little to no clients.
