Gatrine’s story is one of resilience in the face of hardship. Born to parents who never had the chance to go to school, she grew up in a home where education was a luxury they simply couldn’t afford. Despite this, Gatrine was determined to learn. She worked tirelessly during school holidays, tending to school gardens just to stay in class. Her perseverance got her as far as Senior Two, but as the eldest child, she had to make a difficult choice, drop out and work so she could help support her younger siblings.
While struggling to make ends meet through casual labor on farms, Gatrine met a boda-boda rider and soon found herself pregnant and abandoned. Her situation quickly worsened. Her parents turned their backs on her, unable to support another burden, and the father of her child, who already had no stable income, disappeared, leaving her alone in a rented house she could no longer afford.
With nowhere to go, Gatrine now relies on a friend for shelter, but it comes at a cost, she works as a household helper in exchange for a place to sleep. She has no income, no security, and no way to provide a better future for her young son.
